Long time deadhead getting back into the music thanks to a new computer with a disc burner. First show was at Soldier Field in 91 with Roger McGuinn opening and remember it (most of it) like it was yesterday. Hopefully I can contribute some stuff here. Later.

Welcome! This archive is a treasure; we should all remember to click on the "donate" link from time to time:

http://www.archive.org/donate/index.php

Don't ignore the other parts of the archive which also contain brilliant music.

A shortly-to-be TDIH has come to mind:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1969-04-23.sbd.miller.98968.sbeok.flac16

...and quite a good source of covers, e.g. for this show:

As long as it's beating people to the punch time ...

And of course, there are hundreds more where that came from! You'll find that folks around here are always willing, able and eager to help you waste time as productively as possible. Provided your definition of "productively" is a bit flexible :-)

Hi there. Warning, if you have better things to do with your time, well, you might end up putting some of those things to the side when you get busy on all the music your computer can bring to you... Have a great time, and pick out some goodies. There have been some sweet shows put on this website lately from 1976.

Check out the section called This Just In. A couple of weeks ago this beauty came in:

Nonsense. I've written many hundreds of pages of unpublishable prose while listening to scratchy-sounding long-forgotten Grateful Dead concerts...not even counting my forum posts!

Anyway, glad to have you on board. Here's one of my favorite underrated recordings:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd76-07-16.menke.cribbs.16943.sbeok.shnf
Entire first set is flawless, with sound crispy as all hell. 2nd set features an epic version of Cosmic Charlie and mournful High Time. Free to download.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks. I'll have to take a listen to that 76 show. I have had a horrible audience tape of that show for about 20 years so I'm in need of an upgrade for sure.

The link I shared is, as AUDs go, relatively airy and crowdy. But you really have to poke around and figure out what your ideal sound level is. For me, it's "whatever makes the drums go BOOM and the guitars echo". On that Menke AUD, the drums go boom and the guitars echo. Yeah there's an annoying drunk lady that yells sometimes, but it's worth it. On the other hand, you may really dig the compact, just-the-band sound of a SBD.

As a new Archive head, however, also keep in mind that there's a little link near the top of every show that says "Click to check for other copies". This link is your friend.

What's good to do when about to download a new show is to open up every copy in a different tab or browser window, and play the same song in each of them and see which one sound the best to you. It's best to try out quiet songs like Stella Blue as that will give you a good idea of which recording makes all instruments stand out despite the song.

Also- click on "date added" after you click to check other copies. That way, you can check out the most recent transfer. And another also, make sure you are a few songs into the show so the sound and levels have been figured out.

I don't see a great deal of value in sorting the transfers of a show by the date they were added. Quite often the newest transfer does not represent the best available sound quality for a performance.

If you want to get the CM release that has the most recent fixes you can do this via the date added, or by the shtn id #, so yes, there is value in sorting by date.

That would be assuming that Charlies transfers are always the very best sonically. I know that you are well aware of the fact that this is not always the case.

There is way too much junk being added here on a daily basis to assume the most recently added tranfers are the best quality. And you, being a stickler for sound quality, know this well so don't pretend otherwise...

Have to agree about the sonic trash being added. TJI is usually a disappointment. Why do we need another crappy AUD uploaded to join the 6 or 7 other crappy AUD transfers of any given show?

That is true. I always do have a look at TJI, but you know most of the time, I let them go. But I do have to say, i have really enjoyed the '76 stuff Charlie Miller has been putting up recently. You gotta admit, it's good shit.

Just like the reviews that start out with "I was at this show!!!!" and go on to explain the time of day, the weather and everything else that has nothing to do with the quality of the recording and performance, sifting through the crappy AUD transfer that people post just to see their name in lights gets mighty old mighty fast.

Have to agree there. When reading a review of a show that I wasn't at, I just want to hear about the music. The ambiance is all well and good, but when I'm picking a show to play on the way to work, the fact that Larry scored some liquid LSD off a dude in a clown suit and later thought that urinating on a police car was an excellent idea, despite being entertaining, doesn't help me pick a show. As for quality of recordings, you can easily pick those tapers who have produced excellent work on a fairly consistent basis (Jim Wise, for excample).
IHMO, of course.

Nice! I think I read that review somewhere... But seriously, with regard to a reviewer's dance down memory lane...I don't care that you were at the show!!! Guess what? I was at a lot of shows too!!!!

Thanks dude, I love it when people post shows that are they fav's or new or something. Can I ask everyone who mentions a show to put a link to that show. Sometimes I just want go to shows recommend by other people, just hit the comments, and then hit a show.
